All You Need To Know About E-girl Makeup And Aesthetics in 2024

With every generation comes a new makeup trend. We’re all familiar with goths and emo kids, so it’s only natural that Gen Z discovered their spin-off on the outsider aesthetic. With the rise of cottagecore, dark academia, and other subculture trends, after VSCO girls and ABGs (Asian Baby Girls) came E-girls. Their unique makeup, style, and fashion sense quickly gained popularity on TikTok and Twitch. But how exactly do we define e-girl?

Allows us to dip into the world of the e-girl trend and explain everything from how to define e-girl, to a guide on how to create the perfect e-girl look. If you decide to spice things up a bit and try out the e-girl makeover yourself, you’ll have a blast watching the tutorials. So let’s start by quickly explaining what an E-girl is, shall we?

What Does “E-Girl” Mean?

E-girls, known as the new bad girls of the Internet (think Billie Eilish or Euphoria’s Kat Herman), can be pinpointed by four main traits.

The most obvious one is the unique aesthetics e-girls embody, mixing the k-pop bling, anime kawaii-ness, cosplay, and early noughties aesthetics with a dash of emo or grunge, and you'll get an e-girl who wields a Mini Katana to complete her striking look.

Another essential factor of the e-girl aesthetic is the online presence. After all, e-girl stands for “electronic girl,” so expect the e-girl to be interested in video games, or YouTubing, or both. E-girls typically have a big following on TikTok or other social media platforms. Of course, some people just like to dress up the way e-girl do, without putting on an entire Internet persona to match their looks.

E-girls are also interested in activities that guys like, such as skateboarding or playing video games, and they’re often great at them, to the gentlemen’s surprise.

And finally, the last definitive part of the e-girl aesthetic is their unique personality. An e-girl is confident, blunt, revolutionary, and casual all at the same time. She is very similar to a manic pixie dream girl in that sense.

If you’re trying to match the e-girl aesthetic, try to go for an alternative look. Colored hair, heavy makeup, and thrifted clothes are all e-girl 101s.

Speaking of the e-girl fashion sense, there are many spectrums to the e-girl look, from Billie Eilish’s grunge cyberpunk aesthetic (we’re talking pre the Happier Than Ever album) to Belle Delphine’s babydoll strawberry sugar cake style.

Where did e-girls come from? The e-girl aesthetic has been long coming. It started in 2010, and it had its predecessors in many film characters, such as Scott Pilgrim’s Ramona, Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn, and even adorable anime Sailor Moon. What all these characters have in common is their powerful positive outlook, so it’s no wonder these characters became idols for girls and, more specifically, e-girls all over the world.

Like we already mentioned, the typical e-girl isn’t phased by society’s expectations on what a woman should do. An e-girls' interests are typically male, like playing video games and streaming live on Twitch, skateboarding, listening to punk rock, or being obsessed with anime.

Another significant aspect of the e-girl is the online presence. How e-girl or e-boys act online and on social media may be completely different from how they act in front of friends, family, and at work.

Inclusivity and gender values also define E-girls and e-boys. The lack of gender norms is a recognizable part of their style. The e-girl and e-boy aesthetic doesn’t frame their style in a strictly masculine or feminine identity, which gives tons of fluidity to their style and makeup.

These values encourage men and women to wear the makeup and clothes they want, so no wonder tons of makeover videos by boys went viral on TikTok. This body-positive subculture is growing day by day, and we’ve decided to help you have a complete e-girl makeover yourself. By the time you finish this article, you’ll become a pro at doing your own e-girl makeup, and we’ve even gone out of our way to recommend some amazing makeup products to fit the look. Let’s dive in!

A Guide To The E-Girl Makeup Look

E-girl makeup has some definitive elements that make the aesthetic instantly recognizable. Of course, feel free to copy the entire e-girl makeup guide or simply select elements from it that you think will fit your aesthetic. Remember: the e-girl makeup and style are all about being comfortable in your own body. The point is to feel empowered, after all!

Let’s start with the most obvious one – e-girl eye makeup. Grab yourself some eyeliner and begin doing the fox eye trick! If you haven’t done fox eye makeup, we have a whole article explaining the tricks behind this eye-catching look!

Heavy eyeliner is essential. Use your imagination to add some spice to the look. You can draw small triangles on your lower eyelid to imitate those cute anime eyes. Or you can draw shapes like hearts or dots under your eyes. So kawaii!

Nose Piercings are quite common in e-girl aesthetics, are nose piercings and septum piercings. When you're applying makeup, just make sure to apply face or makeup products, and follow good aftercare practice, if you had the nose piercing recently.

Fake eyelashes are another common feature of the e-girl face. Fake eyelashes make your face look more animated, and they accentuate your eyes. They also help achieve a total makeover and make your eyes pop. Fake eyelashes are recommended for people with hooded or semi-hooded eyes because they make them look bigger.

Next up are the eyebrows. You might need an eyebrow pencil or cream. Don’t worry, we’ll list some makeup and a detailed guide on how to do your eyebrows in the section below. The main thing to go for is thick, lush, and well-shaped eyebrows. Think Bratz Doll eyebrows or Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet. If you ask me, Jim was an e-boy long before the term was coined.

Depending on the type of e-girl you want to be, you might want to start thinking about blusher palettes and eyeshadow palettes. If you’re a goth cyberpunk e-girl, you might like blue and dark purples.

Or maybe you want to go for a pastel or kawaii e-girl. Focus on pastel colors, pale skin, and fake freckles.

By now, you’ve probably noticed that e-girls don’t usually keep their natural hair color. They might have highlights or different-colored hair. Some might even wear wigs in their YouTube videos, ultimately transforming their natural features. Of course, changing your hair every two weeks like Ramona Flowers might not be everyone’s cup of tea, so only make changes if you're comfortable with that. A few products will really make a difference if you decide to go for an e-girl hairstyle. We have included some in the guide below!

You won’t be a proper e-girl without the right kind of clothes. What does that mean? Well, it varies from person to person. Just think about Billie Eilish, who wore baggy clothes not because she was trying to cover up or hide her body but because she felt comfortable in them.

Like Kat from Netflix’s TV Series Euphoria, others prefer to dress up to make a statement. Her clothes don’t tend to be provoking but instead focus on the message that women should wear whatever they want, whenever they want.

Of course, there are some styles that e-girls and e-boys are inspired by, such as anime, goth, grunge, and cyberpunk. Baggy clothes, stripy tight tops, soft pink clothing, chokers, cat ears, and other accessories tend to complete the look.

So let’s go into detail and try to explain how to do e-girl makeup! The section below will give you a few inspirations and products so you can quickly transform into an edgy e-girl.

How to Create the E-girl Makeup Look

This simple step-by-step guide will help you create the ultimate e-girl makeup look. Everything you need is linked below for your convenience.

Step 1

Before you start applying any makeup on your face, make sure you have some primer on hand. The baby-ish face is unique to the e-girl look, so choosing a shiny primer rich in hydration is essential. This illuminating face primer by L’Oreal Paris won’t break your bank and will add a healthy shine to your skin for hours on end.

Step 2

Not everyone has perfect model-worthy skin. Some of you might like to cover up imperfections using a foundation, concealer, or powder. Personally, I prefer light touch-ups for a more natural look. I can wholeheartedly recommend the Rimmel Stay Matte lightweight powder because it doesn’t feel heavy on your face and won’t be a pain to wash off.

Step 3

We saved the fun details for last. When you start putting makeup on the face, never begin by coloring your eyebrows or putting on lipstick. Make sure to start from the ‘background.’ This includes using a blusher, which is an essential part of the e-girl aesthetic.

But let me tell you something – even the most expensive blusher won’t look right on your skin if you use the wrong brush! So before I start throwing in my blusher recommendations, make sure you grab your makeup brushes. This BS-MALL Makeup Brush Set 11 Pcs Bamboo Synthetic Kabuki Brush Set is super affordable and includes everything you might need to complete your makeup routine. Now that you’ve got your brushes in order, it’s time to move on to the next step.

Step 4

Blush Blush Blush! Using a blusher is of utmost importance if you’re after some simple makeup to look like an e-girl. The Makeup Revolution Ultra Blush Contour Palette in Sugar & Spice comes in 8 powerful shades.

Personally, I love the iridescent pink, and I tend to use it as a highlighter on my cheekbones and the tip of my nose. The Golden Sugar palette is perfect for e-girls with darker skin tones. The best part? It’s absolutely affordable, it’s cruelty-free, and the palette is compact, so you can take it with you anywhere you go.

There’s a trick to applying your blusher when going for a soft e-girl look. Instead of applying it where you usually would, e-girls wear blusher on their nose and extend it to the apples of their cheeks. Add some highlighter on the tip of your nose, on the sides of your cheekbones, and the part of the bone just underneath the ends of your eyebrows. Voila – you look absolutely adorable!

Step 5

Speaking of eyebrows, you already know e-girl eyebrows are a thing. Those thick and shapely eyebrows are symmetrical, carefully filled in, and perfectly combed. You can’t get that effect without using an eyebrow brush, so let me drop my favorite duo eyebrow brush!

I know some people might be into eyebrow gels, pencils, and whatnot, but I found eyebrow cream to work best for me. Not to mention it’s a money saver. Sure, the Anastasia Beverly Hills dip brow I use may be a little expensive, but I use it all year long. It’s ultra long-lasting, I have even gone for an occasional swim, and my brows looked untouched afterward. This particular eyebrow cream has so many different shades and colors. It’s ideal for most hair types!

Step 6

The last makeup step! I can’t let you go without talking about some liquid eyeliner. From years and years of experience, I can recommend you diss the eyeliner pencils and go pro. Use fine-tip eyeliner brushes. They look a bit like an ink and brush set and can go ultra-thin, like this Revlon Colorstay Skinny Liquid Eyeliner. It’s just 0.1 mm thin, and it’s waterproof, of course.

Pair that with a set of fake eyelashes. I tend to bulk buy because it’s cheaper, so you won’t go wrong choosing the Faux Mink Lashes ultra-cheap set of 20! They come in different shapes as well, so you can experiment with a different style every day!

Step 7

This optional step is for those of you who want to mix it up with your hairstyle. I recommend a coloring conditioner for those of you who don’t want your hair damaged from intense color treatments. My favorite one is the Overtone Semi-Permanent Color Depositing Conditioner. It comes in many beautiful shades that will make your hair pop!

Listen, I know no one likes to read a written tutorial on makeup. So I’m saving you the brainpower – we live in a visual age, after all.
