Introduce Yourself to a Fashion Publicist with this Handy Email Template

One of the questions I get asked often by bloggers is what exactly they should write when introducing themselves to a fashion PR agency for the first time, and it is one of the more common deliverables that I create for the fashion and beauty bloggers I work with through my Brand Elixir sessions. Whether you are just home from LuckyFABB (so jealous of that gift bag) with a ton of business cards in your pocket, headed to the IFB mini-conference or the Fashionista Conference in LA next week (see you there!), or just flying blind with a list you've created with your BFF google, here is a simple template you can modify to make the first move.

Dear [name],

PERSONALIZATION

I hope you are doing well. [Something about the weather/season/the fact they just got back from Belize]. Congrats on [recent bit of press coverage/celebrity event attendance/collection launch for client X].

INTRODUCE BLOG FOCUS, LOCATION AND AUDIENCE

My name is [name] and I’m a [location]-based [fashion/style/beauty/lifestyle] blogger with a background in [marketing/retail/photography/]. My site, [name of site] aims to [inspire/educate/explore ] [goth teens/college-aged women/young professionals/clueless dudes] about how to [increase their style confidence/explore luxury fashion/DIY their wardrobe] through features and articles like [Daily Outfits/Shopping Hauls/Stylist Q&As].

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS

Most recently, I was [a featured panelist at LuckyFabb/written about on IFB/hit 6k followers on Instagram], which was very exciting. I get an average of about XX blog visit per month and have a combined social media following of XX.

SPECIFIC REQUEST

I’d love to be added to your media list for any events or opportunities that would be a fit for my site. I cover [fashion/beauty/weddings/children’s fashion/handbags], and I am especially interested in [connecting with you a collaboration idea I have about X/attending your next pop-up/learning more about your clients and how we might work together.

NEXT STEPS

Please let me know if my blog sparks any partnership ideas. As a quick example, I'd love to [style/feature/learn more about] [client X].

Thoughts? I look forward to connecting further,

Name

This is, of course, just a guide, but hopefully by ensuring that you include the following broad elements you can begin to develop mutually beneficial relationships with fashion PR agencies. Do you have a different approach? I'd love to hear about it in the comments.

    Hi,

This is very useful as a base to start!

I was just wondering if there was any advice for those of us who are completely new and have only just started but want to work with a fashion PR in order to get the word out about our new business? We only launched www.CovRbags.com a week ago however want to work with people in the industry who can help us spread the word to the right audience

    Would appreciate any suggestions!

This was really helpful read Crosby. However, I’m interested whats the efficient way to approach brands or some PRs online. So far only one PR has approached me through email about endorsing new product lineup.

I work in PR, and I think this template is great. There’s definitely a wrong and a right away to approach this. The only thing I’d stray away from though is playing the ‘numbers’ game. It’s a huge turnoff to me when bloggers reach out and try to justify themselves by their social media following or page views.

It’s a lot more important to explain what your goals are by partnering with a certain client. How will the client benefit / relate to your readers? And also including relevant articles / events / collaborations you’ve done in the past.
