Daily Inspiration: Doing what you like is freedom, Liking what you do is happiness

freedom hapiness

The search for happiness goes beyond the ages, as is the quest for freedom.

I've found that after working a day job for most of my life, day jobs I never really suck with, that doing what you like is super important. Going out on my own, I did find a new freedom being able to work when I wanted, not to have a boss after me, doing only the work that I liked. But after a while it also became a job. I have to start work at 7:30 every morning (two hours earlier than I did employed) and work until 7:30 at night, I have to answer to sponsors in order to ensure income for the contributors, the developers holding the site together, and myself. All to do what I “liked” but for a while it didn't seem like it was freedom.

Then I realized, that liking what you do, it's not just about doing the “fun” parts. You know, the blogging, the tweeting, the engaging with new and interesting people… it's important to deal with the not fun parts… the figuring out technical problems, accounting, the pressure to be “on” all the time. That every job has it's fun parts and it's boring parts, and no one is immune to that.

What was missing was a sense of gratitude. It's not just enough to like what I do, but to be grateful I get to do it… for a living! Then things started to change, I became happier with my work.

Anyway, this probably has nothing to do with the quote, it's a little off topic… but still, the message is clear, liking what you do (and to be grateful for it) is indeed the path to happiness.

This is great inspiration for a Friday, the last day of the work week. It inspires you to think about what truly makes you happy and to get the courage to do whatever that may be!

    Thanks for the inspiration!

When I tell people what I am planning (people at work) they think it sounds easy, and because they think it sounds easy, they think it will fail. They do not realize that I am going to have to break myself in half to make my dream a reality – and that it’s totally worth it, because I will be creating the life I WANT instead of a life I feel obligated to continue participating in.

I feel like all of the blogs I’m reading today are validating my choices! 😉 This quote is great, as is the post.

Yeah … blogging is fun when you do it like this. I do interviews with inspirational women here in Melbourne … so I get lots of inspiration through that.

I really liked this post! I think that’s the the perks with any dream job – we imagine things to be easy and fun all the time, but there are equally as many challenges to come with it and things we have to adjust to.

Same goes for blogging – I love having a blog, and being able to blog, but I felt like I’d been in a ‘blog rut’ lately because of trying to fit in a schedule, networking, coming up with new ideas etc.. but your main point of gratitude is what changes everything.

When we focus on being positive, the things we don’t like as much don’t seem that bad! It’s all about focusing on the bigger picture 🙂

I wrote an article expanding on the whole ‘staying positive’ thing right here, which might be useful to new bloggers trying to be patient with the growth of their blog – http://emiliciastyle.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/making-it-as-new-blogger-top-6-blog.html

    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

What a great quote! I’m my own boss too and it has it’s stressful moments. But at the end of the day it’s so much more satisfying to know I’m doing what I want for me, instead of for someone else.
